A magnitude 4.5 aftershock has shaken Christchurch residents awake this morning.
The jolt struck at 6.46am, and was centred off the coast of Waimiri Beach, 20km east of Belfast, at a depth of 12km.
GNS Science reported the quake was "strongly felt" in Christchurch.
People described the quake as "rolling" on Twitter.
"Well if I wasn't already awake that would have done it. Heard it coming for ages before the house started dancing," Allie wrote.
"Shuddering rolling. Felt like it went on for awhile," Ian Henderson wrote.
