Union leaders say more than 30,000 public sector workers have rallied in central Sydney in a massive protest against the New South Wales Government's industrial changes.
Carrying flags and waving placards, a sea of teachers, nurses, police, firefighters and other public servants flooded into the Domain for a "day ofchaos" aimed at the Barry O'Farrell Government's public sector reforms.
"I stand here and see over 30,000 people from across the state in front of me who have spoken with their feet and taken action today to come here and send a very clear message to Barry O'Farrell," Unions NSW secretary Mark Lennon told the vocal crowd.
"Stop the cuts, restore our rights, because, Barry, we're not going to take it any more."
Across town, Premier O'Farrell described the protest as "pointless".
"It's just chaos for the sake of chaos," he told reporters at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick.
He questioned the legality of some of the action, particularly by ferry workers. Their decision to walk off the job to protest against plans to franchise out Sydney Ferries was "an act of bastardry", he said.
Organisers had anticipated crowds of about 20,000 would join the rally against government plans to slash 5000 public service back-office jobs and impose a 2.5 per cent wages cap for public sector workers.
