DAKAR, Senegal (AP) The joint United Nations-African Union peacekeeping mission in Sudan's western Darfur region says three Senegalese peacekeepers were killed and one injured in an attack by unidentified gunmen.
A statement issued Sunday said the ambush occurred Sunday morning as members of a police unit were escorting a water convoy from the town of El Geneina to the force's regional headquarters in West Darfur. A vehicle was hijacked in the attack but later recovered seven kilometers (four miles) away.
The attack occurred two days after a Zambian military observer with the UNAMID peacekeeping force died after being stabbed when his vehicle was hijacked in North Darfur.
The UNAMID force was established in 2007 to help secure Darfur, where 300,000 people have died since 2003 due to fighting between the government and rebels.
