KEY POINTS:
PARIS - At least 20 Catholic pilgrims died yesterday when a bus crashed near the French city of Grenoble.
The coach was descending a steep incline between Grenoble and La Mure when it smashed through roadside crash barriers, plunged down a 15m ravine and burst into flames.
The BBC said the coach was returning to Poland from the shrine of Notre-dame-de-la-Salette, where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to two children in 1846.
Firefighters said the bus appeared to have had a problem with its brakes.
And in southern Romania early yesterday, eight people were killed and two dozen injured when a train slammed into a bus carrying guests home from a wedding. The accident happened at a crossing in the village of Gura Ocnitei, 80km north of Bucharest, at 4.50am.
