SYDNEY - A man who sued the NSW Scouts Association and his former scoutmaster over years of sexual abuse has been awarded more than A$1.2 million ($1.43 million) in damages.
Xavier McCrae, now 22, was sexually assaulted by his scoutmaster Robert Potter on hundreds of occasions between the ages of 13 and 17.
Potter is serving jail time for sexually assaulting four teenage boys.
McCrae sued the Scouts, claiming they had been aware of Potter's behaviour since at least 1988, 11 years before he met McCrae, and had failed to act.
District Court Judge Peter Johnstone found in favour of McCrae yesterday and awarded him more than A$1.2 million in damages, A$500,000 of which is to come from the Scouts.
The Scouts are also to pay costs.
