More than 62 per cent, or 10 million, same-sex marriage surveys have been returned to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
The count includes the number of surveys returned as of Friday and shows 800,000 forms had been received since the previous week, the ABS said yesterday. The estimate is based on the bulk containers of returned forms and not a count of individual forms.
Yesterday, Victoria Police chief commissioner Graham Ashton threw his support behind same-sex marriage, saying gay cops deserve the "same rights as everyone else". He told 3AW radio: "We think (it is) probably something that should've happened a while ago." All arms of Victoria's emergency services now publicly back same-sex marriage.
On the opposite side of the argument, a giant 'NO' has been written in the sky above Melbourne. A group opposing same-sex marriage says they crowdfunded the skywriting, as they did in September when they paid for "Vote No" to be written above Sydney.
The Anglican Diocese of Sydney has donated A$1 million to the "no" campaign.
