Situation:
A front weakens as it moves north over the South Island today, while a trough to the east of the North Island shifts east. A ridge of high pressure covers the North Island on Sunday, while a northwest flow develops over southern New Zealand ahead of an approaching front. A front, which is preceded by strong northwesterlies and followed by strong, cold southerlies, moves northwards over the South Island during Monday. On Tuesday, the front is forecast to stall and weaken over central New Zealand. The moist, easterly flow over northern New Zealand should strengthen through Tuesday and Wednesday as a sub-tropical low approaches from the north, and a new ridge builds over the South Island.
