At Whanganui District Council, the mayor and his officials are hoping for the best but preparing for the worst, as heavy rain hits the region.
"The emergency centre is all set up and ready to go, the Civil Defence people and our emergency manager have just prepped volunteers and other organisations that assist in Emergencies," says Hamish McDouall, Mayor of Whanganui.
According to Horizons Regional Council, the river is pulsing and at this point in time, will not flood.
"People will be told that there has been flooding, but if you live by a water course, use your own discretion," says Mr McDouall.
MetService has predicted peak intensities of 15 to 25mm per hour of rainfall in the Whanganui Region.
