Two brown kiwis have been released at Lake Rotokare in central Taranaki.
"We got Hori, and he comes from Tongaporutu, from a private land owner's property there. The other kiwi is called Piko, and he is from Whitecliffs walkway area. Parininihi Trust looks after that area," says Sue Hardwick-Smith, chairperson of the Taranaki Kiwi Trust.
Lots of kiwis have been released here over the years.
"The reserve here is 230 hectares and we have released 31 kiwis in here that are going to be here permanently breeding. They have reared up, and we have around 70 or 80 kiwis here now we think," says Hardwick-Smith.
The kiwis will remain at the reserve for around three months until they reach one and a half kilos, before being transferred to Mount Taranaki.
