The tragic plane crash that earlier killed two people also meant no power overnight for more than 40,000 people living in Gisborne and the surrounding region.
This morning some schools opened but many people stayed home, or just went to the beach.
It's been almost 2 days without Power here in Gisborne, and the streets are deserted. If you wanted to buy a generator it's too late, they all sold out within hours, as did all the torches, batteries and BBQs.
Bunnings expect another shipment of supplies today, but by then the emergency may be over. Despite terrible conditions, the power company are hopeful that power will be restored today.
So far there's been just five reports of burglaries. That's actually less than the same period last week. But just to be sure Police rostered on extra staff last night.
