Youth hostels accommodate travellers of any age who are members of the organisation and are willing to sacrifice a little peace and space.
For this, travellers can stay in cheap accommodation, often in the same areas as the upmarket hotels. Youth hostel managers can provide information on local eateries, and fellow travellers can provide companionship as well as stories of their adventures. In addition, single and double rooms are now becoming as common as dormitories.
There are more than 4500 hostels in 60 countries, and 57 of them are in prime spots around New Zealand.
The New Zealand YHA site is a good place to see what this large and well-established organisation has to offer. The site contains several pages of common-sense information on how to go about your OE, including the latest in the ever-changing British working visa requirements. It also has links to the complete hostel lists for France, the United States, England and Wales and Canada.
Hostels worldwide are also listed on the International Youth Hostel Federation site with further links to individual hostel sites for more detailed information.
A real advantage of the Youth Hostel Association is its online booking system. You can book a bed in hostels in many countries through the IBN, or International Booking Network.
This secure booking service also lets you check bed availability at individual hostels. You can even use it at your current hostel to make bookings for your next one.
