I've never been to Gallipoli, but I'd love to see the place. Not with the crowds on Anzac Day, but I'd like to catch it out of season; just to get the measure of the terrain, a better understanding of the awful propsects the Anzacs faced that day.
Many years ago, I toured some of the battlefields and war graves of Northern France and Belgium. We popped into Caterpillar Valley, paid our respects at the grave of the great Dave Gallaher and stayed a night in Le Quesnoy, a town where Kiwis are still revered.
These trips are a great excuse to go somewhere, but it's what you do as well as the remembrance that makes it really worthwhile.
