I get a bit of grief — some good natured, some of it less so — about flying in Business Class rather than back in Economy. At the water cooler, colleagues will wind me up about it. On the letters page, readers get their turn.
The argument goes that, instead of seeking or accepting a seat in Business, the Travel Editor should travel in the same fashion as most of the readers do — back in Economy.
I say: bugger that. As far as I'm concerned, I am doing what most of the readers do, namely getting the best seat possible. Here's my two-tiered philosophy: always ask for an upgrade and always accept the result in good grace, whether it comes through or not. (And believe me folks, I've flown further in Economy over the past few years than pretty much all of our readers.)
