Auckland has missed the train.
A rail link - be it light-rail or heavy - from the CBD to the airport would have been a good idea several decades ago (provided it was part of a larger commuter rail network). But now is too late.
Driverless cars, the increase in cycle users and wind-turbine technologies powering electric cars are about to make new urban rail investments redundant all over the world.
Instead of putting billions into a heavy-duty rail project, Auckland should be working towards a fleet of driverless electric buses working the airport-to-CBD run - and also taking passengers to the many other popular hubs around our city.
