Reading books is a great way to stop thinking about your imminent death. The concentration is a distraction. Also, it makes you look cool — I once read a book on a plane when I thought we were about to slam into a Nepalese hillside. It was a heavy tome about Napoleon's awful retreat from Moscow. As we were buffeted around, I read with such focus and intensity that, when we landed safely, all the other passengers remarked upon what a cool customer I had been in terrifying turbulence. I merely nodded.
We started sharing scary flight stories last week, and we've got more stories.
They make for fun reading — but don't let them put you off: the one thing they all have in common is that everyone who shared a story survived their flight. And you will too. I promise.
