In Vancouver last year, I was struck by the coolness of the Digital Orca sculpture by Douglas Coupland which graces the city's waterfront. It got me thinking about our own oft-maligned-but-recently-reloved waterfront.
So, for what it's worth, here's an idea:
How about Auckland sets up a sculpture trail featuring unique artworks from some of our Pacific Rim and Pacific Island neighbours?
We could make our Pacific shoreline the home to permanent works by up-and-coming (ie: cheap) young talents from Chile, Guatemala, Mexico, the US, Canada, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Samoa, Fiji, Tonga ... forgive me if I missed you.
The trail - provisional name: "Aldworth's Genius Sculpture Trail" - could stretch from the Parnell Baths all the way to the Tank Farm, and local wealthy families (yes, there are some of those) could be coerced into funding it. Perhaps a small plaque could appear near the sculptures they paid for.
