In a week: Having a staycation in my home city to celebrate this year's Auckland Heritage Festival (heritagefestival.co.nz). Running from September 24 to October 9, there are a whole host of events showcasing just how Auckland has changed throughout history, from craft workshops, to food tours; live performances to guest lectures. Where better to hole up for the occasion than the city's historic Hotel de Brett, which started life in 1841 as The Commercial Hotel.
In a month: New York, because there's surely no better place for a city break, than the city that never sleeps. I'll stay at the St Regis, an 18-storey heritage hotel which, when it opened in 1904, was the city's first skyscraper. Guests have included Salvador Dali, Marlene Dietrich and Alfred Hitchcock.
In a year: Completing my quest for holidays with a touch of history in Greece — home of numerous ancient ruins and recently voted by Conde Nast Traveler readers as the best country in the world. Starting in Athens with a whiz around the Acropolis and the Parthenon, I'll then hop my way around the islands, visiting beautiful beaches and enjoying delicious food.
