KEY POINTS:
Even those of us who have called Wellington home for most of our lives can find a hidden gem in the windy city.
And so it was when we made the journey to Palliser House, a big white 1904 villa that offers the best harbour views around.
The property is available for rent to visitors who want to be close to the city's well-known culture and sporting facilities, while also maintaining a degree of privacy and homeliness.
What makes Palliser House unusual is the amount of time and effort its owners have put into making it unique.
Perched above Oriental Bay, the house is a short walk down a well-lit path from one of the city's most exclusive streets. It has hosted some noted faces (who the discreet owners do not talk about), thanks to its understated elegance and warm, private setting.
Inside, we are welcomed by Jennifer, who shows us around the three-bedroom villa, pointing out interesting art and furniture, as well as the stunning views.
The house can accommodate up to six people in a range of rooms which are all on one level.
One particularly large room has a luxurious big bed and a gas fireplace, with lots of storage space for those who prefer to travel heavy. It is tastefully decorated and makes us feel right at home.
The second room has a harbour view and features an amazing wooden bed and wardrobe, the likes of which we've never seen before. These pieces were bought by the home's owners, who clearly had an eye for something bold when they made the purchases.
Off this room is a modern en suite, complete with harbour views from almost every spot.
The third room is a bit smaller, but still inviting and warm.
It's hard not to spend too much time gazing out the living room windows, where a panoramic view of Wellington Harbour stretching from Te Papa to the Hutt motorway spreads before our eyes.
At night, the view is enchanting. By day, with the Cook Strait ferries chugging by and yachts gliding past, it's an ever-changing hive of activity. An enclosed balcony overlooking the harbour is the perfect spot to soak it all up.
After a thoroughly relaxing weekend perusing Palliser's selection of books and magazines, Jennifer gives us a tour of the inviting garden she has created.
Punctuated with sculptures and natives, it has a wonderful deck that's ideal for a late afternoon glass of wine overlooking the harbour.
