There are gardens aplenty in the Coromandel area. Twelve minutes' drive from Coromandel town is wacky Waiau Waterworks, a garden full of interactive contraptions.
Visitors can pump water by bike power, listen to a water-powered music box, and figure out how the giant water-powered clock works.
The gardens are dotted with humorous sculptures, the playground is described as suitable for kids up to the age of 80, and there are swimming holes in the river.
Serene Rapaura Watergardens at Tapu on the Thames Coast seamlessly link native bush and man-made gardens. Birdsong accompanies visitors as they stroll past sculptures, through seasonal planting displays and along meandering bush paths to a waterfall. Rapaura also offers secluded accommodation.
Ngatea Water Gardens cover 2ha at Ngatea, south of Thames. There are theme gardens, water features, picnic areas and a children's play area.
