As the motorway from Auckland extends northwards, Warkworth and the surrounding area is an appealing destination for out-of-town guests. Attractions include beaches, historical sites, art and craft establishments and wineries. An overview of the region's delights is presented on the Warkworth community website.
The Auckland Regional Council's Tawharanui and Mahurangi Regional Parks are well worth a visit. Tawharanui, a farm park, boasts white sandy beaches, evidence of Maori occupation, native bush, an offshore marine reserve and magnificent views to Little Barrier Island. The beautiful Mahurangi Regional Park is situated at the mouth of the historic Mahurangi Harbour.
Close by is Zelandia, an impressive sculpture garden featuring Terry Stringer's works, which are displayed against a magnificent stand of native bush, and his equally attractive house. On the banks of the Matakana River is the Morris & James Pottery and Tileworks. There are free daily tours of the establishment and a pleasant outdoor cafe is set in a ceramic courtyard.
The Matakana region is fast becoming an important wine region. Down the road from the pottery is the Matakana Estate winery and Herons Flight is around the corner. Also in the region are Hyperion Wines and Mahurangi Estate winery.
