The two-hour, self-guided Takapuna-Milford walk passes historic points of interest on Takapuna's "Golden Mile". Highlights include the old telephone exchange and Post Office, homesteads dating from the 1800s, Algie's castle and a fossil forest.
The walk mostly follows public roads and paths, but part of the route between Milford and Takapuna Beach follows the foreshore and crosses private property. It is best to take the walk at low tide when the fossil forest is visible and the foreshore is more accessible. A guide to the walk is available online. Look under City Life, Exploring the Shore, then Heritage.
