For everything you need to know about the Waitakere Ranges, drop into the Arataki Visitor Centre.
Not only does Arataki provide information on the environment, heritage and activities in the area, it's also an attraction in itself.
The centre features fantastic views over the surrounding ranges and a series of stunning carvings, explained in the booklet Nga Tohu a Nga Tupuna.
The staff have up-to-date information on tracks, and track maps to buy before setting out.
A 1.6km, one-hour nature trail starts from Arataki and passes through mature and regenerating forest.
Arataki is open 9am-5pm every weekend and on weekdays from September 1 to April 30.
Winter weekday hours (May 1 to August 31) are 10am-4pm.
It is closed Christmas Day.
