New mountain biking and walking trails at Waitomo will add above-ground adventure to the area's attractions.
An organised trail ride is being held on Sunday starting at 11am. The 25km trail should take between two and three hours, and it is regarded as a Grade 3 (Grade 4 if it's wet).
The well-marked route includes a native bush track with beautiful views of the Waitomo Valley, as well as quad tracks, sheep tracks, gravel roads and some twisty tarmac.
Entry is $20, $15 for under-16s.
Make a weekend of it and catch the Waitomo Caves Sports Day on Saturday, where you can watch the country's top shearers and wood choppers.
The sports day includes cattle corralling, steer riding, horse events, dog trials, go-karts, food stalls and novelty events such as an Easter egg hunt.
The event starts at 9.30am. Adult admission is $3, kids free.
