Mum was right: smoking is a filthy habit. But there's no need for it to be a dirty habit too, particularly when travelling. To avoid flinging butts into foreign gutters - which, in Singapore, might result in being arrested - smokers might take a packet of design go portable ashtrays.
These re-usable plastic pouches (there are five in each pack) are simple to use: open, drop your butt in, then press the stud button closed. The aluminium foil liner is heat resistant (though it will feel a little warm) and seals itself, starving the butt of oxygen and putting it out. And it works. All you have to do is empty it in the first available rubbish bin.
Design Go claims the pouches are odour-controlled, not that it matters, because it seems unlikely to add to your usual smoker's stink.
The Clean Streets kit sells for $15.99 and is distributed in New Zealand by Signature Marketing, which has product stands at selected Unichem, Amcal and Life pharmacies, Farmers, Briscoes, Pac 'n' Pedal and the Automobile Association.
