My partner and I recently got back from holiday in Bali. At first I was a little apprehensive about going but it was years since we'd gone on holiday. Disclaimer — I'm a bit of a scrooge, I like to save a bit of coin where I can, so Bali was actually the perfect destination. We tried our hardest to stay away from the hugely "touristy" areas, staying on the island of Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan. We had a beautiful spot right on the beach. It was absolute magic. The views are surreal, it felt like we were standing in a painting. The people are lovely, the food is amazing. For me, it's my ideal holiday destination — beautiful, relaxing and cheap.

I was touring in Beijing and I decided to take a cheap flight to Singapore for the weekend to see an old friend. The ticket had a short stopover in Hong Kong, but it was cheap. I packed a small bag and off I went. I had such a great time, but on my way back I was stopped in Hong Kong by the flight attendant, who said I couldn't travel on, as my visa into Beijing was a single entry. All my luggage and my people were still in Beijing but I had to stay in Hong Kong. I met up with the touring party before flying back to New Zealand. Moral of the story — always check your visa.
