HIT
The weather in June in Hawaii was perfect. We hired a VW Kombi Campervan and hit the north shore of Oahu and just slept under the stars lulled by the sound of the ocean. My son loved the adventure of it. No internet, no phone, just "us" unplugged. Then we flew to Maui and rented a condo for a week. The beach in front of our condo had resident sea turtles that would swim with us daily, such majestic creatures. Mango season kicked in, which had me smiling from ear to ear and the farmers and fresh fish markets boasted gourmet delights. Maui offers golden sand beaches with an irresistible laidback energy. We will be back!
MISS
I had to travel to Utah to do publicity for a movie called The Other Side of Heaven, about an American Mormon missionary, John Groberg, who travelled to Tonga. I had to go to malls for autograph signings and visit universities for Q & A sessions. They were so star-struck by us small-town Kiwis that it felt completely awkward. It was Christmas time and we got snowed in, so I was facing the prospect of eating turkey with strangers, instead of hangi with whanau. However, I did get to go to a Utah Jazz game and yes, the snow storm cleared and I was home by Christmas.
