The three Kennett brothers are icons in the New Zealand mountain bike world, known for their abilities, knowledge and huge passion, and their book is itself a classic.
Now in its sixth edition, Classic NZ Mountain Bike Rides is the bible of where to ride in this country. The new release means I was finally able to update my fourth edition and was immediately stoked to read there is a new track, Cougar Park, in Tokoroa, hopefully a worthy replacement for my old favourite, Big Rock, which was lost to forestry.
It's worth getting the latest edition even if only to find out about the new tracks to try, and the old tracks to avoid because they might be overgrown.
With over 350 rides outlined it's easy to find good tracks, from Cape Reinga to the deep south. I probably won't get to ride the Scott Base track mentioned but it made for interesting reading.
The book is an enjoyable holiday read too, as it is sectioned into regions, making good riding spots quick to find when away from home.
The Kennetts have given each ride a grading which I found great for letting me know how hard (or easy) a track may be, the estimated time needed to finish a ride, as well as instructions on how to find the trail in the first place.
It's pretty vital when you're looking at track to know whether it's an afternoon's ride or, as with the Wakamarina trail near Blenheim, I should go prepared to spend the night.
I really enjoyed their list of top 50 rides, each marked with a little thumbs up image. They've got to be good rides to make that list and I certainly totally agree with them on each one I've ridden.
The tips and tricks at the front of the book are well worth the read, even for experienced riders. At the back of the book, a checklist of what gear to take is a great way to prevent forgetting the important things that make the trip that much more fun and comfortable. There are even some tips on what to do when lost ... not that I've ever needed them ... much.
The laidback and sometimes humorous writing style of the Kennetts combined with plenty of good photos throughout the book help make this an easy read. The wealth of information makes it a must for anyone wanting to hit the dirt.
