Touring a country by train can be a great way to see the countryside and meet other passengers without being confined to a seat, as is the case on planes or buses.
There is no shortage of railway information on the internet. Timetables, travel planners, fares, maps, search directories, train news, luggage storage, available meals, even ticket sales are available on many railway sites.
Europe has a tremendous number of railway websites. For those interested in buying a Eurail pass, the Eurail site lists all the information on train travel in its 17 member countries.
For travellers who want to spend days rather than hours on a train, the official site of the Russian National Tourist Office describes the Trans Siberian route, as well as giving historical and tourist information on the cities and towns the train passes through. The Trans Siberia travels along the longest continuous rail line on earth, a journey of about 10,000km.
Indian Railways also has its own site where you can learn about the finer details of the railway class system, which for tourists include second-class unreserved, second-class sleeper, first, and air-conditioned first-class carriages. The site also details timetables, fares and the Inrail Pass.
