The 120-year-old Tokaanu Wharf at the southern end of Lake Taupo is being restored in a five-year project.
The 260m-long wharf was built last century to service a tourist route that followed the Whanganui River, the central North Island plateau, and across the lake to Taupo.
In recent decades it has been the source of many fine trout catches.
