KEY POINTS:
Take time to research the best time to holiday at your chosen Thai destination because the climate can differ from region to region and there are monsoons to avoid. We holidayed in the sun in Bangkok and Koh Samui during the September school holidays.
It is cheaper to book local excursions - in our case the River Kwai visit, elephant trekking and snorkelling trip - in Thailand rather than beforehand in New Zealand. For safety's sake use companies recommended by hotel lobby staff.
Consider employing a local guide - from your hotel lobby for example - at the start of your visit. It's a good way to find your feet in terms of the best places to sightsee, dine and shop, for example.
If you're a cautious person it will pay to check your insurance policy regarding travel by tuk-tuk. Apparently some insurance policies don't cover this mode of transport.
Make visiting a tailor a priority, although seek advice on reputable ones, and the end result should be impeccable and inexpensive garments. The service tends to be speedy too. We had two suits and one dress made within 48 hours. We visited the tailor for measuring, were picked up from our hotel the next day for fittings, and the completed garments were delivered to our hotel the following day. Our guide recommended a tailoring business called James Tailor.
Include a snorkelling trip in your itinerary to add a truly magical touch. We travelled to the stunningly beautiful Nangyuan Island Dive Resort two hours out from Koh Samui. The water was aquamarine and the fish sensational.
Take a break from motorised transport and walk the streets, it's the perfect way to soak up the atmosphere and Thailand has plenty of that on offer.
