If you're thinking of horse riding, the non-profit International League for the Protection of Horses (NZ) produces an annual brochure called Where to Ride in New Zealand.
The brochure lists dozens of riding and trekking operations that have been checked out by the league and which meet the standards required by the 1999 Animal Welfare Act.
The list may not include all reputable operators, but it is a good starting point for anyone wanting an equestrian element to their holiday.
