Once you've done all the theme parks, what else is there to keep the family entertained?
1 Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary
For animal lovers, look no further than the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary — it has a history reaching back more than half a century and offers plenty of up-close-and-personal animal encounters. Start off the day by feeding a rainbow lorikeet — expect to get your hair messed up — then drop by the pelicans and make friends with a kangaroo. On the cold-blooded side of things, the crocodile behaviour show will have the kids on the edges of their seats. If you visit on a Friday, the Sanctuary hosts international food markets from 4pm to 9pm, so you can always stick around for dinner.
2 Learn to surf
The Gold Coast is known for its great beaches and surf breaks, so there's no better opportunity to get your little groms out on the water for a surf lesson. Learn from the pros that call these waves home at the Walkin' on Water Surf School at Greenmount Beach in Coolangatta. The waves here are gentle and forgiving, perfect for beginners. As well as single lessons, the company offers 5-day intensive programs for kids who are keen to keep learning.
3 GC Aqua Park
Kids will have a blast slipping and sliding on this epic playground on water. GC Aqua Park is a giant inflatable obstacle course located at Broadwater Parklands, with plenty to wear them out — from trampolines, to slides, swings and giant icebergs. Lifejackets are compulsory and lifeguards are at the ready, so parents can sit back and relax while the youngsters make a splash. Kids as young as 1 can even take part in the fun — there's a tamer mini-splash area especially for littlies. Children from 5 to 9 year olds can take on the main park, with an adult supervisor in tow, while those older than 10 can take it on alone. Sessions run for 50 minutes.
