The List: Shopping hot spots in Hong Kong

Megan Singleton pays a visit to some of Hong Kong's best shopping hot spots.

PMQ

Police Married Quarters in Central is an eye-opener as much for the fact that these tiny shops used to house police families sometimes as large as 10, as it is for the designers who have set up businesses in them. You'll find emerging designers creating fashion and jewellery, some importing stylish homewares or cool gadgets, all spread out over six floors. Finish at Sohorama on the ground floor for dinner, or a creative cocktail at the very least.

HORIZON PLAZA

This 28-floor outlet mall is at Ap Lei Chau on Hong Kong Island. It's not as vast as it sounds if you manage it systematically. Take the lift to the top floor and work your way down. There are about 10 shops on each level all surrounding the stairwell. You'll find a few discount designer stores like Lane Crawford, Joyce and Max Mara, homewares, baby shops, furniture and garden goodies.

LADIES MARKET

An oldie but a goody at Mong Kok, Kowloon. If you like a bit of hustle among the bustle, there are 100 vendors all selling things such as handbags, clothing, jewellery, watches and gadgets. A great place to pick up a scarf and a new wallet; start your Christmas shopping early with stocking stuffers of caricature USB sticks and enjoy yourself. The key to getting a bargain is being friendly and cajoling shop assistants into a nice discount.

RISE SHOPPING ARCADE

Granville Rd at Tsim Sha Tsui is the shopping location for those in the know. Along the road you'll find fashion stores and boutiques selling budget to mid-priced clothing. Look for quirky and innovative ideas, young designers and young people browsing and buying the next look. Rise Arcade is four floors of tiny, cubby-hole sized shops of fun.

IFC

The International Financial Centre at Central is a big, modern shopping centre, just a leap from the ferry terminal. It's packed with 200 stores from mid-priced to luxury labels. But the best thing is the view. Shop up a storm then head to the rooftop for a drink or a meal with killer waterfront views.
