Tawhiti Museum is an amazing collection of life-size exhibits and scale models, housed in a former cheese factory near Hawera. The models and figures are designed and built on the premises, and are arranged with local artefacts to bring Taranaki history to life.
Many casts were taken from real people, and the Body Shop studio shows the production process. Seasonal hours apply, but at present it is open Friday to Monday, 10am-4pm. The Tawhiti Bush Railway runs on the first Sunday of each month, every Sunday during school holidays, and most public holidays, weather permitting.
Museum admission: adults $8; children 5-15yrs $2; preschoolers free.
