Outgoing New Plymouth mayor Andrew Judd said he wasn't surprised at the region's inclusion.
"I'm just absolutely stoked to hear that," he said.
"That's fantastic news, and just shows all the work of my predecessors and my time and I'm sure those that follow has come together to prove that we are a great little place."
Taranaki's diversity and "ability to punch above our weight" made the area special, according to Judd.
"It's locals pulling together to open a world-renowned art gallery, which you might not expect to see in other regions.
"There's the rural lifestyle, affordable living, great schooling, all those things you'd think of as small town New Zealand."
Any potential visitors were advised to make an immediate beeline for the region's jewel in the crown, Mt Taranaki.
"We're proud of our maunga, our mountain, the beacon of the history of the area and its beautiful scenery.
"You'd need to go to Tawhiti Museum out in Hawera, we're really proud of our coastal walkway that takes in the vista of the rugged West Coast, and our art gallery and the Len Lye Centre."
Coming in second "shows there is more work to do", Judd said.
"We've just got to convince New Zealanders to come visit."
The news caps off a big couple of days for Taranaki after three of the homegrown Barrett brothers were named in the All Blacks touring squad.
Judd said it was a sign that Taranaki was "coming of age".
"Move over Auckland, Taranaki has arrived."
