If you thought an ancient Maori waka would have little in common with the four-wheel-drive vehicles of today, maybe you need to spend some time with Eddie and Tina Ngeru near New Plymouth.
The couple run an eco-adventure tour business on their 450ha farm, where visitors can plunge in and out of native bush astride quad-motorbikes or in four-wheel-drive vehicles - or they can take a passenger seat in an eight-wheeled all-terrain argo.
They can also try their hand - and shoulder muscles - at paddling a replica of an ancient Maori waka, a job that needs at least 12 people in the 20m-long canoe.
The Ngerus' property is southeast of New Plymouth at Purangi, on the banks of the Waitara River.
