One way or another, the three Great Walks of Wellington manage to give some insight into much of the city's history of Maori settlement around 1000 years ago and the arrival of Europeans in the 1840s.
Allow a day for each of the walks - though you can always choose to take a rest and climb aboard a yellow City Circular bus which travels most of the areas covered by the walks. Buses come by every 10 minutes and a ticket is $2.
Choose from the Old Shoreline Walk, the walk of the Waterfront and Commercial Centre or The Government: an Historical Suburb and the Botanic Gardens Walk.
