A mere 160km from Auckland or a more modest 45km from Hamilton, Raglan is a charming little coastal settlement popular with surfers, artists, musicians and people who've chosen lifestyle over the rat race.
The beaches are mainly black sand so be sure to pack your jandals and a thick blanket for lying about on in the height of summer, and you'll also want your fishing rod, your surfboard, paddleboard or kayak - and if you don't have your own gear, there are plenty of businesses to rent from. There are so many places to eat and drink and sip great coffee it'd be rude to mention any one place by name, although Raglan Roast is hard to beat, if you must know. The skateboard bowl by the water is enormous and a big drawcard for teens, the second-hand shops are filled with treasures and the Bridal Veil Falls are a must-visit if you can manage a not-too-taxing walk for a magnificent view. The golfing, horse riding, kayaking, surfing and walking are also top-notch; in fact, don't make it a day trip, stay for at least a weekend. There are loads of delicious food emporiums open from dawn until relatively late, although you also can't go past fish and chips on the beach as the sun sets into the sea.
