Many people will have heard of Herald Island, but few will have visited this quaint little Auckland suburb. It is 25km from central Auckland, and near Hobsonville, reached by a causeway.
Once you're on this sleepy little piece of land, you could happily while away an afternoon or longer. Pop down to the wharf looking out at Greenhithe Bridge and fish, or just circumnavigate the island, in a pleasant 2km stroll.
Try out Christmas Beach's playground and, if the tide's in, take a wee dip. In the centre of the island is the community hall, more play areas and lots of green space. The island's dairy closed a year ago, so pack a picnic.
Think about starting your adventure at the Hobsonville Point Farmers Market, or stop into any of the vege shops on Hobsonville Rd; they can't be beaten for price and quality.
Various events are held on the island throughout the year, including a community garage sale when locals hawk unwanted possessions on the berm and the Santa Parade every Christmas morning is great fun.
