My uncle and aunt were in town this week, visiting from England. It wasn't their first time here; in the early 80s they spent a year teaching at Takapuna Grammar School (shout out to Mike and Pam Holmes' class of 83!)
Their return visit had its ups and downs. The good: touring TGS and meeting former colleagues still teaching there. The bad: the Lions losing against the Blues.
It was interesting to hear their views on my adopted country and how much it's changed.
The North Shore is "almost unrecognisable", Auckland CBD is "so busy!" and the diversity in the restaurant scene is "amazing!"
Their trip down memory lane made me take a fresh look at the city I've now lived in for 14 years. And despite standard Aucklander gripes — house prices, public transport, congestion, etc — I still think I'm lucky to call this place home.
