A recent trip to Borneo really tested the boundaries of my comfort zone.
While I relished the opportunity to see orangutans in the wild, I struggled with the ferocity of the local mosquitoes, who let no layer of clothing stand in the way of a good meal. An eco-lodge in the middle of the rainforest with no Wi-Fi was a welcome opportunity to be off the grid. But the rats in the bathroom somewhat ruined the serenity. A cave full of cockroaches was possibly the worst place I've ever visited.
But the chance to see green turtles hatch, then release them into the sea just minutes later was a moment I'll never forget.
Travel's not always glamorous ... but it is always worthwhile.
