Art deco walks are the thing to do in Napier City, which was levelled by earthquake and fire in 1931 and rebuilt in the 1930s styles of Spanish mission, stripped classical and art deco.
The city's Art Deco Trust offers 2 1/2-hour guided walks every Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday for $10 a person. Children can join in for free. From October 1 the walks set out every day (except Christmas Day). Shorter guided walks, for $8, are available all year.
There's also a chance to explore the suburb of Marewa, built in the 1930s and 1940s on swamp-land raised by the earthquake. An art deco walk booklet is also available for those who prefer to find their own way through a 1.5km historic city trail.
