It's easy to conjure up images of knights and maidens when wandering through the buildings at Montsalvat in Melbourne.
The imposing, three-storey Great Hall, built entirely from Silurian mudstone, bluestone and slate, looks hundreds of years old.
It features an enormous dining room and fireplace, narrow staircases and intriguing ante-rooms. But it was built in the 1930s - a dream of artist and architect Justus Jorgensen - who bought the 4.8ha property in Eltham.
With his students, Jorgensen also built art galleries on the property and several French Provencal-style cottages.
Today, many art students attend courses at Monsalvat, which is open to the public daily from 9 am to 5 pm. About 26km from the inner city, Montsalvat can be found on Melways maps at 22 A8.
