Otago University students will soon be able to travel standby from Dunedin on Air New Zealand.
The Otago Daily Times reported the airline would next month introduce $39 standby fares for students.
Air New Zealand deputy chief executive Norm Thompson said students would be able to fly anywhere nationwide for $39.
Details were still being finalised but an announcement was expected within a fortnight.
Dunedin International Airport chief executive John McCall told the newspaper the deal would fill vacant seats on planes.
Otago University Students' Association president Edwin Darlow welcomed anything that made it easier for students to travel, while Otago Polytechnic Students' Association acting president Meegan Cloughley said it sounded "fantastic" and hoped it would be open to all students in the region.
