It could be somewhere in Europe, hundreds of years ago, but the wine cave carved from sheer rock at Gibbston Valley Wines is in the Kawarau Gorge near Queenstown and plunges 76m into the depths of the Central Otago rocky schist.
Every hour, from 10 am to 4 pm daily, guides take visitors on a tour of the vineyard, winery and into the caves for wine tasting. Private tours and wine-tasting sessions can also be arranged.
