For a mid-winter alpine wilderness adventure with a difference, check out the Nevis Snowmobile Adventure near Queenstown.
It starts with a spectacular helicopter ride over the Remarkables from Queenstown to the company's base camp on the Old Woman Range.
After being kitted out in specialised attire and receiving instructions on snowmobile use, riders carve through pristine snow to sites that offer spellbinding vistas of this remote area.
Tours run from late June to early October, depending on snow cover.
