Get within two or three metres of the world's most endangered penguin, with a guided tour through underground trenches and hides at the home of the yellow-eyed penguin, just outside Dunedin.
Twenty-six kilometres from the city and well signposted, Harington Pt protects a private conservation effort to save the yellow-eyed penguin, funded entirely through the profits from the tour operation.
Sighting the penguins is guaranteed during the 90-minute tours, but the guides are protective of them, limiting each tour to 15 people and banning use of camera flashes.
The cost is $27 and bookings are essential. From October, the tours leave every half-hour on the quarter, from 10.15 am to 7.15 pm.
