The Rotorua lakes open for the trout-fishing season on October 1, and the evening before, on September 30, Lake Tarawera Landing will be the scene of a Scottish ceremony that is an integral part of Rotorua's fishing season.
From 5.30pm, hundreds of boats gather for Opening Eve, when the haunting tunes of pipers drift across the still waters of the lake.
Plenty of locals don their kilts for the occasion, which includes a Gaelic fishing boat blessing and the addressing of the haggis as part of the formalities.
A Celtic rock performer adds to the atmosphere.
