Rotorua hostel named best in Oceania

Rotorua's YHA Treks hostel continues to be a hit with travellers.

It has just been judged the best hostel in Oceania.

The Hostelworld best hostel awards (or Hoscars) are based on feedback from 800,000 backpackers throughout the world.

The evaluation covers six criteria which are character, security, location, staff, fun factor and cleanliness.

In addition to naming the top three hostels in each continent, the awards recognise the top 10 hostels in the world.

This year, Portuguese capital Lisbon did particularly well, with four of its hostels named in the top 10 list.

Hostels in Cardiff, Krakow, Beijing, Florence and Barcelona also made the top 10.

Cairns hostel Dreamtime Travellers Rest was named second-best in Oceania, while another New Zealand hostel, Jailhouse Accommodation in Christchurch, was placed third.
