Record number of Kiwis visit Tahiti, surpass Australians

• New Zealand is the third-largest tourism market for Tahiti, with 9068 visitors in 2024.
• Visitor numbers increased by 7% in 2024 compared to 2023, with growth expected to continue into 2025.

Kiwis are pouring into the islands of Tahiti in record numbers as New Zealand becomes the third-largest global tourism market for the South Pacific archipelago.

According to latest data released by Tahiti Tourisme, 9068 New Zealanders visited Tahiti in 2024, which is 14.5% more than Australian travellers and a 7% increase compared to 2023 figures.

New Zealand is the third-largest market for Tahiti, after the US and France, followed by Canada and Australia. However, based on the number of visitors per capita, New Zealand is considered the island nation’s largest market with 1.8 visitors per 1000 New Zealanders, Tahiti Tourisme said.

The research showed growth was expected to continue into 2025. The number of air arrivals over the first half of the year is projected to increase by 1.7% compared to 2024.

Tahiti Tourisme New Zealand account director Caroline Brunel said she was “thrilled” to see the significant uptick in Kiwi visitors.

“The growing interest is a testament to the diverse experiences we offer, from our stunning landscapes to the strong cultural and historical bond between the Tahitian and Māori cultures, which resonates deeply with New Zealand tourists,” Brunel said.

“New Zealand is one of our closest and key markets, accessible with a short flight less than 5 hours from Auckland. This proximity makes it an easy and convenient destination, and we look forward to introducing our beautiful destination to even more travellers this year.”

Tahiti is the largest island group in French Polynesia, comprising 118 islands. The popular destination is well-known for its diverse landscapes — from blue lagoons, and white sandy beaches to towering mountains — its friendly people, and delicious local cuisine.

From Auckland, passengers can fly directly there through Air New Zealand or Air Tahiti Nui.
